Resumo(s)
The study focuses on understanding and integrating the practices of critical design, speculative design, design fiction and futures into the fashion ecosystem with the aim of catalysing sustainability. It defines and problematises the three practices, situating them in the spheres of design, art and futures. The research analyses Design and Futures from a historical and evolutionary perspective in order to question the link between critical, speculative and fiction design and futures activity. The research employs a qualitative and exploratory methodology involving the fashion brands Chalayan, Iris van Herpen, The Fabricant and Pangaia, by analysing and interpreting eleven collections (samples) from the respective brands. The samples are analysed using interpretative and inductive qualitative analysis methods through future scenarios. The most important concepts from this analysis are extracted and organised to establish an understanding of the use of the processes of the three design practices in the fashion ecosystem. Critical and speculative design and design fiction have different approaches, but they all use Narrative and the discursive object as the main tools in their practices. In this study, narrative and sustainability help to identify the analysis samples in which these practices manifest themselves. The binomial of narrative and sustainability allows the scenarios developed to be articulated. The contribution of this dissertation is to understand the integration of the three practices in the fashion ecosystem, which through narrative as a provocative and inquisitive co-design tool can catalyse positive and more sustainable changes in the fashion ecosystem. Narrative as a discursive tool facilitates articulation between the agents and natures of change, and boosts Sustainability in the fashion sector. This analysis contributes to a discussion about the past, present and future between design and the fashion ecosystem
