Este estudo investiga a emergência de tentativas de censura por parte de utilizadores nas bibliotecas da Rede de Bibliotecas Municipais de Lisboa (Rede BLX), tendo como pano de fundo o aumento internacional de contestações a materiais e ações de protesto contra livros. O objetivo principal é diagnosticar este fenómeno em território português, particularmente no contexto das bibliotecas municipais de Lisboa (Rede BLX). A investigação segue três linhas de análise: (1) o nível de preparação dos profissionais de bibliotecas para lidar com tentativas de censura; (2) a frequência e a natureza dos casos de contestações de materiais e produtos da biblioteca, e (3) a cultura profissional relativa à defesa da liberdade intelectual, à luz do debate entre neutralidade e ativismo. Os resultados indicam que, embora os casos de contestação nas bibliotecas da Rede BLX sejam ainda em número reduzido, alinham-se com a tipologia de contestações observadas internacionalmente, particularmente por grupos politizados da extrema-direita, com foco na oposição a conteúdos LGBTQIA+. O estudo revela também que a cultura profissional na Rede BLX segue o paradigma da biblioteconomia social, com os bibliotecários a assumirem o papel de agentes de mudança, embora mantendo uma postura de neutralidade no que diz respeito à disponibilização da informação.
This study investigates the emergence of user-driven censorship attempts within the Network of Lisbon Municipal Libraries (Rede BLX), situated against the broader context of the global increase in book challenges. The primary objective is to assess the extent of this phenomenon within the Portuguese context, specifically within the Lisbon municipal libraries (Rede BLX). The research is structured around three key analytical dimensions: (1) the preparedness of library professionals to manage censorship attempts; (2) the frequency and nature of challenges within these libraries; and (3) the prevailing professional culture concerning the defense of intellectual freedom, framed within the ongoing debate between neutrality and activism. The findings suggest that, although instances of contestation within the Rede BLX libraries remain infrequent, they exhibit patterns consistent with the typologies of challenges observed internationally, particularly those driven by politically motivated far-right groups, with a marked focus on opposing LGBTQIA+ content. Additionally, the study reveals that the professional culture within the Rede BLX aligns with the principles of social librarianship, where librarians are viewed as agents of social change while maintaining a neutral stance on matters of information access.
