Mendes Correia (Porto, 1888-Lisboa, 1960) foi um dos principais impulsionadores da Sociedade Portuguesa de Antropologia e Etnologia e o mentor da Escola de Antropologia do Porto. Fez parte de associações científicas brasileiras e propôs brasileiros para fazerem parte da SPAE. Viajou para o Brasil em 1934 e 1937, tendo visitado várias instituições dedicadas ao ensino e à investigação. Conheceu vultos da intelectualidade brasileira, como Gilberto Freyre, e promoveu o intercâmbio intelectual entre os dois países. O Brasil fez parte das suas reflexões – a ex-colónia era um bom exemplo do sucesso da colonização portuguesa nos trópicos e a demonstração da possibilidade de convivialidade entre indivíduos de supostas “raças” diferentes, não sendo a mestiçagem vista como uma ameaça. Além da língua, destaca o património cultural e biológico da nação sul-americana – do qual exalta a influência portuguesa sob a expressão “cultura luso-brasileira” – e debate preocupações comuns aos dois países.
Mendes Correia (Porto, 1888 - Lisbon, 1960) was one of the main driving forces of the Portuguese Society for Anthropology and Ethnology and the mentor of the Porto School of Anthropology. He belonged to Brazilian scientific societies and proposed Brazilian colleagues to the SPAE. He travelled to Brazil in 1934 and 1937, having visited several institutions of teaching and research. He met high-profile Brazilian intellectuals, such as Gilberto Freyre, and promoted the intellectual exchange between Brazil and Portugal. He considered that former colony as a good example of the Portuguese colonization’s success in the tropics and demonstrated the possibility of good sociability between individuals from supposedly different “races”, not regarding miscegenation as a menace. Besides language, he emphasized the Brazilian cultural and biologic heritage – praising the Portuguese influence, by using the expression “Portuguese-Brazilian culture” – and discussed the common concerns to both countries.
