Resumo(s)
The present thesis explores the applicability of geobotanical sciences to landscape planning.
The four main objectives and the subsequent most relevant results are: i) To increase knowledge
about the vegetation landscape of the Paiva River basin (and of the adjacent smaller river basins):
41 syntaxa were found in the region, 12 of which are original (17 climactic forests, 5 of which
original); ii) To discuss phytosociological methodology and related applications: a critic synthesis of
the fundamental phytosociological concepts is presented, as well as a direct application of the same
concepts to the National Ecologic Reserve decree-law; iii) To produce vegetation maps of the study
area, aiming to support an improved landscape planning of the region: maps of the vegetation series
and geoseries of the study area are presented, based on field data and on the bioclimatic maps
produced for this purpose; iv) To evaluate the contribution of Integrated Phytosociology to
landscape management and planning, with regard to the production of significant information, in
particular when supported by vegetation modelling techniques in order to produce cartography: it is
proposed a modelling exercise of the mesophilous forests distribution, using environmental envelope
models. The major conclusion is that Geobotany is an indispensable instrument to substantiate and
to structure any intervention in the landscape, especially in rural areas: specific examples
encountered in the region are given.
