This thesis addresses the problem of web design and how the website layout can contribute to maintain user attention. In this context, the thesis starts by doing a survey of the state of the art in the field of human attention and of how the current findings in this area can be leveraged to create more effective websites. The thesis focus then on website layout, discussing how it can be designed to support user attention. Based on this study, a set of guidelines is identified so that it can be used to develop more effective websites. Finally, the thesis makes an analysis of the layout used by four of the main online newspapers in Portugal, with the goal of assessing the extent to which these guidelines are currently being applied in this media. It appears that some of the guidelines are being used by this websites, but not systematically, according to the most recent findings in attention related research. The biggest challenge found to users’ attention span is the placement of distracting elements near the body text, namely advertising.
