Abstract(s)
Lagos, firstly introduced as the fifth-year project site, through the city analysis and the site visits, the Ribeirinha parking lot and the waterfront area of the city was an area of high interest for our work group presenting various challenges and opportunities, it’s in the heart of the city and near the historical wall of the city. The ground floor of the parking was mostly avoided by people and there was untapped potential in that area of the city. This area, in the old part of the city and near the waterfront of Lagos, it was important for me to attempt in making this area connect to the rest of the city and to attempt to bring some value to the local population of the city through the architectural project. The city is going through a process of gentrification and touristification like most of the big Portuguese cities, and specially Lagos being in Algarve, in the warm south of Portugal, there is a high number of tourists and people buying second homes to vacation there, but that creates multiple issues and difficulties for the local population, especially in housing. The identity of the city is an important aspect for the work, to cherish the sense of community and living that the city has, being a small city that has a lot of touristic housing, it’s important to design a housing program that will attempt to appeal to the local people of the city, this will be attempted through architectural design decisions and strategies, flexibility and adaptability concepts as well as dealing with economical spaces and materials. The project solution is a housing program that will attempt to be a solution to this part of the city, with a mixed program, that will attempt to counteract the touristic functions of a big part of the city’s housing. The master final project aims to reimagine the city’s waterfront and to rethink the city’s housing reality with a possible answer, through the analysis of the city and its reality, and the project exercise, that will be backed with housing and architectural ideas, concepts and case studies that will attempt to give a thoughtful academic project proposal that will bring an important part of the city of Lagos to the people of the city, and going against the current flow of touristic rentals throughout the city.
