Resumo(s)

The Shape of Fire – Large-Scale Ceramic Sculpture and its Firing Processes crosses historical, technological, and artistic perspectives to interpret, systematize and deepen the knowledge related to large-scale ceramic sculpture, especially its firing, kilns, their characteristics, and specificities. The historical dimension organizes the origin and development of the kiln from the three main operating typologies – updraft, cross draft, and downdraft – in a new and updated approach, useful to artists, researchers, historians, archaeologists, and conservators restorers. It then presents a history of the techniques and processes applied to major works of international sculpture, from Ancient Greece to the present day, interpreting its production from the practice of the sculptor-ceramist and gathering scarce, dispersed, and little publicized information, which brings novelty to the interpretation of ancient and modern artefacts and works of art. We focus on the modeling and firing of these emblematic works in the history of sculpture, analyzing their context, application and resources used by the artists. The technological dimension studies the materials, technologies and processes of contemporary sculptors working on large-format ceramics, analyzed from digital sources, so that they are relevant to artists, sculptors and potters interested in developing large-scale projects. The main objective of this research work is the creation of a kiln that adapts to the shape and size of the pieces to be fired, to expand the creative and technical possibilities of ceramic sculpture, directed to innovation and sustainability. The Studio-Kiln can be transported and adapted to new applications and used by artists, designers, and other creatives, in addition to serving as a tool for creating, programming, and promoting knowledge from a practical, ecological, and collaborative dimension, as has been made in the spaces of the Cultural Association Oficinas do Convento (Portugal).
