Resumo(s)
Territories and their heritage reflected in their cultural heritage can be studied from different perspectives depending on the purpose of the research. The doctoral research approaches the strategic characteristic of graphic design as an articulator and interlocutor between the city of Guayaquil and its material cultural heritage. In this relationship, the aim is to recognize methodologies, applications, and best practices of communication from the perspective of design, to value the graphic heritage of a locality.
The problem of the study is centered around rediscovering the identity through these objects. Over time, the urban landscape has been changing, and along with it, the architectural heritage has also been disappearing, significantly reducing the visual memory of these buildings. This highlights the fragility of this heritage. Daily, we observe ornate objects, gates, signs, moldings, and striking geometric and organic patterns that suddenly appear on the facades of heritage houses, capturing our attention and speaking to the visual culture of the place and its projection.
To achieve this goal, a theoretical review was conducted on aspects such as material culture, heritage, and design. The proposed working methodology is based on three main approaches: case study analysis, ethnography, and the development of graphic design projects. Through direct observation and qualitative data collection, it aims to take the first step towards documenting and recovering these graphic heritages, emphasizing the value of memory, the craftsmanship of the objects, and the visual everyday life of Guayaquil. As university professors, researchers, and graphic designers, we consider it important to preserve graphic heritages and ensure their care through the dissemination of their attributes and characteristics.
In line with this, the pilot project "Silent Heritage" was developed, aiming to showcase the historical context of neighborhoods and their forged iron ornaments. Through editorial and typographic strategies, it proposes the transmutation of the material object into a cultural object, fostering reinterpretation of these elements of local architecture and promoting their appreciation and communication in society.
