Resumo(s)

This study focuses on the phenomenon of women mobility in the religious sphere, with special reference to corteges and ritual processions (between the Roman Kingdom and the Roman Republic). It only considers those cases in which the female participation is exclusive or preponderant or the role of the mulieres is exalted as an important component of the ceremonies. In Rome as well as in Lazio, the female presence in rites revolves around the concept of fertility. The role of female slaves taking charge of the events linked to sexuality is peculiar as matrons were precluded from them. On other occasions, women gather spontaneously to beg the gods for pushing dangers away or to thank them for success. This research spreads from Rome to the suburb and Lazio with other noteworthy examples such us the female participation in the rites of the great sanctuaries of Lazio (mons Albanus, nemus Aricinum, Lavinium, Lanuvium, Praeneste, Satricum). The result is a rich and varied picture that belies the theory of the poor participation of women in State liturgies.
