| dc.description.abstract | Numa análise constante do enquadramento histórico e ideológico no presente, toda a arquitetura que nos rodeia deveria ser posta em causa. As primeiras feiras e exposições foram essenciais para o desenvolvimento humano, impulsionando a economia, preservando a cultura e estimulando a inovação. O legado deixado pelas mesmas persiste até aos dias de hoje, moldando o modo como percebemos e interagimos com o comércio, a cultura e a sociedade. Em 1940 durante o regime do Estado Novo decorre em Portugal as Comemorações dos Centenários, Fundação do Estado português (1140) e Restauração da Independência (1640), com maior destaque para um dos principais eventos das celebrações, a Exposição do Mundo Português. Apesar do propósito inicial ser a comemoração destas duas datas, o objetivo primordial era celebrar o Estado Novo, enquanto o acontecimento político-cultural mais marcante do Regime. A exposição, organizada por secções, contribuiu para um importante e vasto legado de peças arquitetónicas graças à participação de um admirável grupo de arquitetos. O Certame foi projetado para fortalecer a identidade nacional portuguesa, ressaltando valores como a história, a língua, a cultura e as conquistas dos portugueses ao longo dos séculos. No entanto, na exposição era representada uma visão idealizada e propagandística do império colonial português, ignorando aspetos negativos como a exploração, a opressão e a falta de autonomia nos territórios colonizados. Com o passar dos anos, houve uma revisão da história que incluiu uma análise mais crítica das práticas coloniais. Anteriormente, as narrativas históricas tendiam a glorificar as conquistas coloniais sem examinar de perto os impactos negativos, como a exploração, a violência e a supressão cultural das populações colonizadas. As mudanças sociais e políticas em todo o mundo têm levado a uma maior conscientização sobre questões de justiça, igualdade e direitos humanos. Isso levou as pessoas a questionar e criticar atitudes e ações que antes eram aceites ou ignoradas, o que se veio a tornar num reconhecimento mais amplo das diferentes perspetivas históricas e culturais, destacando as vozes e experiências das populações que foram marginalizadas ou oprimidas durante os períodos coloniais. A verdade é que os vestígios da exposição ainda subsistem em Belém, sendo uma arquitetura que nunca vai conseguir desapegar-se da particularidade temática a que está associada. Na atualidade questionamos se faz sentido manter este património cultural ou seria melhor desagregá-lo desse passado? | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | In a constant analysis of the historical and ideological framework in the present, all the architecture that surrounds us should be questioned. The earliest fairs and exhibitions were essential for human development, boosting the economy, preserving culture, and stimulating innovation. Their legacy persists to this day, shaping how we perceive and interact with commerce, culture, and society. In 1940, during the Estado Novo regime in Portugal, the Centenary Celebrations took place, commemorating the Foundation of the Portuguese State (1140) and the Restoration of Independence (1640). One of the main events of these celebrations was the Portuguese World Exhibition. Despite the initial purpose being the commemoration of these two dates, the primary objective was to celebrate the Estado Novo as the most significant political and cultural event of the Regime. The exhibition, organized by sections, contributed to an important and vast legacy of architectural pieces thanks to the participation of an admirable group of architects. The event was designed to strengthen the Portuguese national identity, emphasizing values such as history, language, culture, and the achievements of the Portuguese throughout the centuries. However, the exhibition represented an idealized and propagandistic view of the Portuguese colonial empire, ignoring negative aspects such as exploitation, oppression, and lack of autonomy in colonized territories. Over the years, there has been a revision of history that included a more critical analysis of colonial practices. Previously, historical narratives tended to glorify colonial conquests without closely examining the negative impacts, such as exploitation, violence, and cultural suppression of colonized populations. Social and political changes worldwide have led to greater awareness of issues of justice, equality, and human rights. This has prompted people to question and criticize attitudes and actions that were previously accepted or ignored, leading to a broader recognition of different historical and cultural perspectives, highlighting the voices and experiences of marginalized or oppressed populations during colonial periods. The truth is that remnants of the exhibition still exist in Belém, representing architecture that will never detach from the thematic peculiarity to which it is associated. Nowadays, there is a question about whether it makes sense to maintain this cultural heritage or if it would be better to disassociate it from that past. | pt_PT |
