The involvement in casual sex relationships (CSR) is a growing phenomenon in Portugal and the rest of the world. Rates of contraceptive use in these types of relationships found in previous studies have shown a tendency for risk behaviors such as the non-use or incorrect use of contraceptives, placing individuals who are involved in CSR at a greater chance for exposure to sexually transmitted infections. Given the growing normativity of the CSR and the evidence of condomless sex in CSR, it’s relevant to further study the characteristics of these relationships and the dimensions of personality of individuals involved in CSR, as well as ascertain the presence or absence of contraceptives. The objectives of the present study were: explore the relational characteristics of the CSR; examine the frequency of contraceptive use, in particular, condom use, in these relationships; determine the variation in condom use depending on the type and characteristics of different CSR; explore the variation in condom use according to personality dimensions and explore the relationship between CSR characteristics and different personality dimensions, having been considered, for this study, the following types of CSR: curte/ hookup, friends with benefits, one night stands and bootycalls. Data was collected throughout the period of two months, using a research method based on diaries, in which participants (N=10) were asked for information of quantitative and qualitative nature. Data was analyzed trough descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, correlational analysis, and thematic content analysis. Results showed that the most used contraceptives were the pill and the condom, the latter having been used in 52,2% of the sexual encounters of this study, particularly in one-night stands, friends with benefits and hookup relationships. There was also detected incorrect and inconsistent condom use. No relation between condom use and type of CSR was found, but it was observed that, according with to degree of presence of a certain relationship characteristic, there was a variance in the frequency of condom use. It was also found that, depending on the personality dimensions more present in an individual, there could be a bigger or smaller tendency for the presence of certain relationship characteristics. This study contributes to a better understanding of CSR, as well as the use of contraceptives, and its results can be relevant in the planning of future sexual health actions.
