This work of research intends to show the context of Portuguese cutlery, its production aspects, and its origins, as well the cultural values and the role of the product designer in this growing sector. For thousands of years, the geographical area that today corresponds to Portugal has been under several totally different cultural domains. However, one of the factors common to all peoples to this day has been the dependence on the use of cutting instruments for their subsistence. This cultural heritage is present in the shapes, materials and production methods alongside technological innovation. It wasn't until the 1950s that Portuguese cutlery really began to develop on a significant scale. Until then, socio-economic limitations and Portugal's dependence on imported goods held back the possibility of domestic production. This dependence represented centuries of regression in terms of cutlery manufacture compared to other countries that invested heavily in this sector. Today, Portuguese production is considered to be one of the most significant in the world, with around 300 manufacturers, representing one of the industrial sectors with the highest export rate in Portugal. Considering that Portugal was founded through the sword, cutlery represents a valuable cultural heritage, representing the skill and creativity of artisans and the process of designers as a tool for generating innovation. The value of this object is immeasurable, since it has been used by all the peoples who have inhabited planet earth since time immemorial and has helped sculpt society, whose symbolism transcends timept_PT
