frente ribeirinha do lugar.
Following the period of deindustrialisation of the coastline that separates Setúbal from Sado’s estuary, the division between the two environments has deteriorated and consequently abandoned spaces started arising in a symbolic area of the city. Setúbal’s population has always had a close and meaningful connection with the coastline. The urban voids which are gradually increasing and fracturing the landscape, are leading to a lack of interest in its maintenance and further deterioration of the coastline. When focusing on the final portion of this line, it is clear the detachment between Albarquel’s Urban Park and Forte de Albarquel’s beach, separated by a piece of land where the the 8th Regiment of Coast Artillery is based, part of the Portuguese Army, completely deactivated, and abandoned, creating an inoperable area in the coastline. This Final Masters Project suggests the reintegration of this space, returning it to the coastline life, revitalising its flow and suggesting new ways to reconnect these two points in a meaningful manner. The place’s interpretation is based on an analysis of its history, aiming to comprehend its origins, in order to make a complete and conscious intervention. The experience is focused on recognising the characteristic elements that represent this area - water, landscape, and heritage - as the pillars for the architectonic project that looks at differentiating the space, creating a deep and sensorial experience, as part of the local attributes and contributing towards the uplifting of the costline’s life. In an attempt to recover the place’s memory its rehabilitation is crucial, looking for a proximity metaphor reconnecting the emotions triggered by this place in the past and those it can trigger in the future. It is suggested the new uses meet the intentions generated by the path itself.
