The First Peninsular Botanical Meeting performed in 1948, as a result of an idea that appear during the II Centenary of the birth of Felix de Avellar Brotero and the II Centenary of the birth of António José Cavanilles that was held in 1944, was, for us, the first step for strengthening of Phytosociology in Portugal. From this meeting resulted the first publication of the flora and vegetation of the Gerês Mountain (1951-1953). The Third Peninsular Botanical Meeting was performed in 1968 under the organization of the Broteri-ana Society and included an itinerary from Estremadura to the south of Portugal. Names such as W. Rotmaler, J. Braun-Blanquet, A. R. Pinto da Silva and A. Rozeira contribute with the results of several excursions. However, it was the scientific contribution of Salvador Rivas-Martínez in the 1980's that boosted the development of Phytosociology, being completed in Portugal, at 1986, the first PhD thesis with a Phytosociology component, which was followed by many others. Currently, the Portuguese academy is al-ready assisted by dozens of PhDs specialized in this Science, as a result of his remarkable contribution. On the initiative of Salvador Rivas-Martínez, in 1990, a geobotanical excursion was organized to the south of Portugal (Sado, Alente-jo and Algarve), which resulted in the first definition of the phytosociological typology for that territory. In 1994 it was founded the Associação Lusitana de Fitossociologia (Portuguese Association of Phytosociology), which became a member of the International Federation of Phytosociology, and started the organization of periodical meetings (Encontros de Fitossociologia) and, as well, the periodic publishing of the journal Quercetea. In 1999, as the result of an insistent idea of Rivas-Martínez (you must to study the islands vegetation!) appears the first publication of the phytosociological typology of Madeira Island, as a result of a close collaboration between a team of Portuguese phytosociologists with him. Later, after visiting three islands of the Azores archipelago, new syntaxa were published, namely the class Lauro azoricae-Juniperetae brevifoliae and several new associations. His scientific activity and influence were so remarkable that in 2001 he was awarded with the title Honoris Causa by the Technical University of Lisbon. After several visits to the archipelago of Cabo Verde, in 2017, a geobotanical study covering the respective bioclimatology, biogeog-raphy and syntaxonomy was published, in which 5 original vegetation classes are described. We conclude that the contribution of Salvador Rivas-Martínez to the knowledge of Geobotany in Portugal has been remarkable, allowing advances not only in Portugal mainland, but also in the Macaronesian islands.
