Resumo(s)
The purpose of this article is to study some aspects of the relations between local economies and a world-economy, taking as an example the Portuguese province of Trás-os-Montes. The approach is one of comparative statistics, using data about the last decade of the eighteenth century (an epoch in which Trás-os-Montes was only partially integrated into the modern world-economy) and about the last decade of the nineteenth century (an epoch in which Trás-os-Montes was already fully integrated into the modern world-economy). Section 1 contains a brief description of the geographic environment. Section 2 analyzes the available data on population. Sections 3 and 4 review the situation of the province, respectively in the last decade of the eighteenth century and in the last decade of the nineteenth century, regarding integration into wider economic spaces, the distribution of the labor force by sectors, and fiscal payments. Section 5 presents some estimates of total and per capita income and makes a sketch of later evolution. Section 6 tries to make some theoretical conclusions.
