Abstract(s)
The present project work focuses on the evocation of events that cannot be forgotten, related to the Holocaust during World War II, recalling the fundamental role of museums, exhibitions and works of art, so that these topics are debated today. And we emphasize the importance of having courageous people who, faced with unfair orders, decided to follow their conscience, and to disobey and risk to help others. The dissemination of their actions is of great interest so that we can follow their example, in the dimension of the circumstances of each one's life, in the sense of combating xenophobia and intolerance, and improving humanity. We put museology and museography at the service of society, through an exhibition about Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, who issued visas in direct disobedience to Salazar and Circular 14, thus saving thousands of lives, and having been heavily punished by Salazar for this. A project included in the Never Forget Program - In Memory of the Holocaust, in a collaboration between the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL) and the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (SGPCM). We document the participation in the exhibition project Aristides de Sousa Mendes: Reasons of Humanity, from its definition, team building, planning, definition of narrative based on the timeline of events, contents building, script elaboration, implementation in the physical space of the SGPCM. The documentary and artistic exhibition included replicas of documentation, images, and texts in dialogue with contemporary works of art. Initiating in the visitor a reflection on the example of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who decided to save thousands of refugees, regardless of their origin, religion, race, or political colour. The contents and interviews videos were organized so that they can be reused in future events and archived for future memory. This exhibition was possibly the largest and most extensive exhibition on Aristides de Sousa Mendes presented so far in Portugal. Inaugurated by senior figures from the government of Portugal, it was visited by hundreds of people, from judges, ambassadors, students to the civil society, and its positive impact was verified, through the information, interaction with the visitor, and the reflection it triggered.
