In The Hidden Dimension, Edward Hall writes to the architects for the fact that buildings and cities aren't made for whom is going to live in it. When a building or a city is planned, it should be for the people that are going to live in it, in order to respond to their needs.
This study shows a land use that can be promoted, “instinctively”, by people – the dispersed urban gardens. These are also be called “illegal urban gardens” or “spontaneous urban gardens”. These ap-pear in vacant lots or NUAs1 (municipal or private) and despite having the same aim as regulated gar-dens, it doesn't work the same way and neither has the same characteristics. People adapt and trans-form, these spaces, as their own, in order to respond to their needs.
The “dispersed” urban gardens are a reality in many places in Lisbon. They give an important and pos-itive contribution to ecology, culture, society, health and well-being, for all community and for the urban landscape. This positive contribution values the landscape and can be measured in ecosystem services.
Marvila is the zone in Lisbon with more urban gardens (28 hectares) and it has a very recent rural past.
It was studied various components of Marvila landscape: historical and cultural (specially the relations between the villas and the current garden areas), ecological (morphology and geology), development plans into effect and social characteristics. For these last component it was made an interview to the gardeners, to know them better, their needs and reasons to gardening in vacant lots
