The aim of this monograph was to review the antifungal therapeutics options and their limitations, currently available to health professionals, namely pharmacists in Portugal. As this area is so comprehensive, both in pathological variants, either in therapeutic diversity, focus was given to two of the most prevalent dermatomycosis, nail infections caused by dermatophytes, and pityriasis versicolor. The study was structured to allow a framework sequence of content being divided into two parts. In the first was made a physiological approach of the skin and nails, which allowed the understanding of the particularities of different fungal infections and their causative agents. In the second part is attained the purpose of the work, detailing the therapeutic options in these two dermatomycosis. It covers the major groups of antifungal and within these, the active molecules in these diseases, with emphasis on mechanisms of action, the dosages and duration of treatment, as well as drug interactions and contraindications. Finally are also discussed other treatment options, such as a medical device. Lastly is concluded that, available therapeutic options are safe and effective, and is enhanced the importance of pharmaceutical intervention in the implementation, supervision and monitorization of antifungal treatments.
