O relatório de estágio que se segue descreve a experiência do estágio curricular na editora Ponto de Fuga/Pim!, ocorrido entre 1 de outubro de 2020 e 30 de abril de 2021, no âmbito do Mestrado em Tradução na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Com foco no domínio da tradução literária, designou-se, como tarefa de tradução, a tradução inglês-português de várias pequenas biografias de poetas portugueses escritas por Mary Shelley – “Saa de Miranda”, “Jorge de Montemayor”, “The Early Poets of Portugal” e “Camoens” –, presentes no terceiro volume de Lives of the Most Eminent Literary and Scientific Men (1837), que integra a secção dedicada a “Biografia” na coleção de dez volumes de Cabinet Cyclopaedia, editada por Dionysius Lardner entre 1829 e 1846.
Este relatório apresenta uma perspetiva global do estágio, referindo os acontecimentos mais significativos, e os resultados do trabalho elaborado ao longo dos referidos meses, expondo, por um lado, problemas de ordem histórica e cultural do texto de partida e, por outro, os maiores obstáculos sintáticos, semânticos e pragmáticos, assim como uma análise das estratégias de tradução aplicadas para os superar.
The following report describes an experience of traineeship at Ponto de Fuga/Pim! publishing house, which took place between 1st October 2020 and 30th April 2021, as part of the Master’s in Translation at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. Focused on literary translation, the assignment consisted in the English-Portuguese translation of several short biographies of Portuguese poets written by Mary Shelley – “Saa de Miranda”, “Jorge de Montemayor”, “The Early Poets of Portugal” and “Camoens” –, included in the third volume of Lives of the Most Eminent Literary and Scientific Men (1837), which is part of the section dedicated to “Biography” in the ten-volume collection of Cabinet Cyclopaedia, published by Dionysius Lardner between 1829 and 1846. This report presents a global perspective of the traineeship, highlighting the most significant events, and the results of the work developed during the months mentioned above, while discussing, on the one hand, historical and cultural problems of the source text and, on the other hand, the major syntactic, semantic and pragmatic obstacles, as well as proposing an analysis of the translation strategies applied to overcome them.
