| dc.description.abstract | Neste estudo averiguaram-se vários aspectos do comportamento do gorila ocidental das terras baixas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), no Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa, nomeadamente o padrão de actividades, a utilização espacial do cativeiro e o comportamento social do grupo. Investigou-se também a influência do período do dia no padrão de actividades e na utilização espacial. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados com outros estudos de modo a evidenciar tendências básicas que estabeleceram um ponto de partida para a análise efectuada. Os gorilas estudados (N=4) apresentaram padrões de actividade com diferenças significativas em alguns comportamentos. Demonstraram também uma utilização diferencial e um subaproveitamento da totalidade do cativeiro. No que diz respeito às relações sociais entre os indivíduos, o registo de comportamentos agonísticos foi elevado, o de comportamentos afiliativos foi quase inexistente e os comportamentos sexuais não se verificaram. Adicionalmente, verificou-se uma divisão em dois subgrupos sociais, sendo o primeiro constituído por um macho e uma fêmea e o segundo constituído por duas fêmeas. Não se verificaram diferenças significativas no comportamento dos indivíduos ao longo do dia, excepto para a categoria comportamental forragear e no uso espacial ao nível do chão do recinto. Devido ao elevado número de comportamentos estereotipados exibidos pela colónia, este ponto foi também analisado. | dc.description.abstract | In the present work several behavioral features of the Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) were studied and analyzed. I studied the gorilla colony living at Lisbon Zoo and target features such as time-budget, spatial preferences in captivity and social behavior. The influence of different periods of the day in the time-budget and in the spatial preferences was also investigated. Afterwards the data collected was compared with data from previous studies, in order to look for basic trends that could establish a starting point to the analyses. The behavior of the studied gorillas (N=4) presented activity patterns where significant differences were found. The colony showed differences in the use of the exhibit and also considerable spatial under-use. Regarding the social interactions between individuals, agonistic behavior frequencies were high, affiliative behavior duration and frequencies were almost inexistent and no events of sexual behavior were observed. Furthermore, a division of the group in two social subgroups was detected, being the first formed by a male and a female, and the second one by two females. Concerning the different day periods, no significant differences in individuals' behavior were found, with the exception of the behavioural category foraging and the exhibit's vertical use at floor level. Due to the elevated stereotypical behavior showed by the colony, this point was also analyzed.
