dc.description.abstractThis dissertation analyses the scientific trajectory of Branca Edmée Marques, through an integrated perspective, which articulates three central dimensions of her activity: research in radioactivity, university teaching, and the leadership of the Radiochemistry Laboratory at the Faculty of Science of Lisbon (FCL). As the only Portuguese woman to complete a PhD under Marie Skłodowska-Curie at the Institut du Radium in Paris, Branca Edmée Marques returned to a peripheral country with a weak scientific tradition, where she faced institutional constraints, hierarchical resistance, and gender-based barriers. Drawing mostly on Branca Edmée’s archival collection at the Historical Archive of the Museums of the University of Lisbon (AHMUL), this dissertation describes and analyses the obstacles that emerged during the creation of the Radiochemistry Laboratory. It highlights the strategies Branca Edmée employed to overcome these challenges, particularly the way she transformed her heavy teaching load into an advantage in order to identify and attract students who could later become her collaborators. The dissertation underscores the central role of the female presence in the development of the Radiochemistry Laboratory, where a significant number of women found unprecedented opportunities for training and research within the Portuguese scientific landscape of the period. It also reveals how the careers of many of these women remained largely invisible, in contrast with the relative visibility of Branca Edmée Marques herself. By combining the centre-periphery model with a gender-based analytical approach, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the history of science in Portugal, highlighting the agency of women scientists working in an environment marked by inequality and the absence of a research culture. The dissertation thus analysis a part of the history of science in Portugal that had not been previously explored, the history of the Laboratory of Radiochemistry.en
