Este estudo propõe analisar a atuação da censura portuguesa durante o governo de António de Oliveira Salazar, o designado Estado Novo, no período que compreende de 1957 a 1960. O foco principal deste trabalho será a Companhia Maria Della Costa (1948 – 1974), que se deslocou do Brasil até Portugal no intuito de trazer algumas de suas peças teatrais ao público lusitano.
A Companhia Maria Della Costa (CMDC), que teve um importante papel na consolidação do teatro moderno brasileiro, trouxe quinze peças a Lisboa, dentre as quais quatro serão analisadas: A Respeitosa (1957) de Jean-Paul Sartre, Desejo (1959) de Eugene O‟Neill, Gimba, Presidente dos Valentes (1959) de Gianfrancesco Guarnieri e A Alma Boa de Se-Tsuan (1960) de Bertolt Brecht. O estudo estará basicamente centrado nas informações dos processos localizados no Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (ANTT), documentos essenciais para a análise dos cortes efetuados pela Comissão de Exame e Classificação de Espectáculos de Portugal.
As diversas crises atravessadas pelo governo ditador de Salazar entre 1958 e 1962 resultaram em um endurecimento do sistema político, que atingiu várias companhias teatrais portuguesas e, igualmente, a Companhia Maria Della Costa. Ao contrário disso, o Brasil, de onde partiu a CMDC, estava vivendo um período democrático durante o governo de Juscelino Kubitschek. As divergências entre os dois regimes de governo não impediram que Brasil e Portugal tivessem uma relação política bastante próxima.
Este estudo tem por objetivo a compreensão de alguns cortes e pareceres dos vogais da Comissão de Censura portuguesa à luz dos acontecimentos políticos e sociais que perturbaram o governo salazarista durante o período estudado.
Abstract: This study aims at analysing the action of the Portuguese censorship during the government of António de Oliveira Salazar, the so called Estado Novo, from 1957 to 1960. The main focus of this study will be the Maria Della Costa Company (1948 – 1974) that travelled from Brazil to Portugal aiming to bring theatrical plays to the Lusitanian people. The Maria Della Costa Company, which had an important role in the consolidation of the modern Brazilian theater, brought fifteen plays to Lisbon. Four of them are going to be analyzed: A Respeitosa (1957) by Jean-Paul Sartre, Desejo (1959) by Eugene O´Neill, Gimba, Presidente dos Valentes (1959) by Gianfrancesco Guarnieri and A Alma Boa de Se-Tsuan (1960) by Bertolt Brecht. This study will focus mainly on the information of the papers located at the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (ANTT). These are essential documents for analysing the cuts made by the Portuguese Censorship Committee. The several crises faced by the government of Salazar from 1958 to 1962 hardened the political system itself. This was felt by several Portuguese Theatrical Companies including the Maria Della Costa Company. On the other hand Brazil, from where Maria Della Costa Company had come, was living a democratic period during the government of Juscelino Kubitschek. The differences between the two governments didn´t prevent both countries from having a close political relationship. In this dissertation we will try to understand what underlies some of the cuts and opinions held by the members of the Portuguese Censorship Committee in the context of the political and social events that disturbed Salazar's government in the period under study.
