The pharmacological treatment of eye diseases, through the use of traditional formulations, is conducted through the systemic and topical administration. These routes presents limitation about respectively the drug concentration in ocular tissue and the bioavailability of ophthalmic drugs, affected by efficient mechanisms to protect the eye. Thus, the administration of delivery systems of drugs for controlled release ocular surface, has been subject of na intense research in recent years as an alternative in order to increase opportunities for corneal absorption. In this sense, the present review aimed to compile the results of the various studies and literature, referencing the different types of nanoparticles, the types of formulations of nanoparticles with the modified surface characteristics, the properties and the physicochemical characteristics of systems, and applications pointing to the new and improved prospects in the field of ocular therapies.
