Hyperemesis gravidarum is the most severe form of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and itâs the most common cause of hospital admission in the first half of pregnancy. Most of the published studies on this topic are observational and describe a variable recurrence risk associated with different risk factors, the most relevant being the personal and family history of hyperemesis gravidarum. This literature review aims to evaluate the recurrence risk of hyperemesis gravidarum and to describe the risk factors involved. This knowledge can improve the quality of counseling for pregnant women/couples and help identify pregnant women who may benefit from an early multimodal therapeutic plan, with potential impact on maternal experience of pregnancy, maternal and fetal outcomes, and the planning of future pregnancies.
