A economia do trabalho tem como ponto central a análise do funcionamento do mercado de trabalho, o qual pode ser levado a cabo de acordo com o paradigma de análise neoclássico ou seguindo a perspetiva analítica neoinstitucionalista. Se, num primeiro momento, prevaleceu a crítica recíproca, apontando o excessivo
formalismo e abstração, ou evidenciando a incapacidade de ir além da recoleção de informação ou da mera descrição, assiste-se, depois, a uma progressiva e frutuosa interpenetração destas perspetivas. No entanto, esta aproximação não faz eclipsar as diferenças matriciais sobre o funcionamento do mercado de
trabalho, em que os neoclássicos evidenciam o protagonismo das forças de mercado e os neoinstitucionalistas confiam às instituições um papel decisivo na configuração do próprio mercado
The functioning of the labor market, as the core aspect of labor economy, can be analyzed according to the neoclassical paradigm or in accordance with the neoinstitutionalist perspective. If, at first, reciprocal criticism prevailed, pointing to the excessive formalism and abstraction of the former, or showing the inability to go beyond the mere collection of information or description of the latter, overtime there was a progressive and fruitful interpenetration of these perspectives. However, this proximity does not eclipse the matrix differences on the functioning of the labor market, in which the neoclassicals show that market forces are protagonist and the neoinstitutionalists entrust institutions with a decisive role in the configuration of the market itself.
The functioning of the labor market, as the core aspect of labor economy, can be analyzed according to the neoclassical paradigm or in accordance with the neoinstitutionalist perspective.
