Neste âmbito, será proposta a
This dissertation aims at analyzing the parody to the gothic novel as depicted in Northanger Abbey (1818), a novel by Jane Austen (1775-1818). Hence, this study’s main goal is to show that the parody of the gothic novel is not the primary focus in this literary work, nor its end is to depreciate or invalidate this genre. Ergo, it considers the author’s “visions of romance” (NA 228) and the role it plays in the construction and deconstruction of the parody in NA. Thus, this study begins with a contextualization that exposes the role and status of the novel at the time and then analyses the several factors that led to the origin of the gothic novel, including aspects of Austen’s own life, career and motivations. This will help to reveal the true purpose of the parody by connecting it with the reader’s own visions of romance. Following this first moment, selected excerpts are analyzed, first regarding the concept of the gothic heroine, then targeting the gothic conventions and finally, as a consequence, exposing the visions of romance of the characters and showing that those are identified by the reader due to his/her own visions of romance. A final moment regards the social criticism, also important in the construction of the visions of romance which, as this study aims to prove, are mainly a social construct.
