This dissertation seeks to analyze international trade in fragile state, specifically Guinea Bissau. Given this, political instability has been identified as one of the main factors that contributing to the stagnation not only of trade, but also of economic growth and diversification. The country is heavily dependent on the primary sector and virtually on the production of a single product which is cashew nuts, hence the relevance of this sector. In order to study the nexus between trade and economic growth of Guinea-Bissau, official data from the World Bank, the IMF, ITC and other international organizations were obtained for the period covering 2010 to 2019. The analysis of the data showed that Guinea-Bissau had experienced a trade deficit, although, the last four years have seen the emergence of some surpluses. However, the fact remains that the country still imports more food products, many of which could easily be produced internally, such as rice. The government must therefore invest in the specialization of agriculture and diversify its production activities and export base. This can be done with the assistance of the processing industries that goes beyond the manufacturing of primary products. This will allow the country to benefit from substantial gains in international trade, import substitutions, thereby enabling the country to have some sustained economic growth.
