There have been analyses of libertine thought from perspectives marked by the doxa, mainly regarding the understanding of heterodox and dissident phenomena. Reduced to a superficial manifestation and usually related to a disregard of customs, concerning sexuality and the traditional pillars of society, especially those related to religious experience, the libertine sensibility was the target of a gradual obfuscation of one of its founding pillars: the critical problematization of human nature regarding the difference between individual freedom and the cultural fixation of universalizing representations of the world. This thesis aims to explore the libertine problematic from this perspective, highlighting the main traits of libertine manifestations across history. This analysis will focus on the exemplary case of Luiz Pacheco, the Portuguese author who experienced the libertine circumstances in the most complex way and reflected on them, while belonging to the critical landscape provided by Portuguese Abjectionism to more broadly discuss issues relating to his particular universe. From the analysis of texts by Luiz Pacheco in which the true meaning of libertinage is discussed and where he presents his personal point of view on the subject, our aim is to emphasize to what extent the author provides a critical review of Abjectionism and its potentialities regarding the definition of a persistent cultural dynamism, suitable for the persistent critical revision of established values. We consider that it is by a persistent dialogue between an affirmative individuality and the different traditions he engages with that we will discover a possible way of reading the libertine tradition that will further show the strategic importance of Luiz Pacheco.
