| dc.description.abstract | The book may be considered as a container of memory, a “lieu de mémoire” – concept developed by Pierre Nora in the 1980/90’s. The book is an object that preserves moments captured in time – like a snapshot. During a practice-oriented investigation that includes a publication, the book will be analysed as an object that can represent a generation like a portrait, creating a document for the future. People born in mid 1980’s were chosen for this generational portrait. These young adults have just celebrated their 30th anniversary and – in the context of the socio-economical crisis Portugal is living in – are searching for a place in society and trying do be economically independent. Those who are portrayed practice art and science, and produce work that can be relevant in the future. Together they build 30 anos 8 dias (30 years 8 days). Practical strategies are defined to sustain the “book as a portrait” concept. This project assumes itself as an ethnographic study. Based on a collaboration between author and those portrayed, 30 anos 8 dias attempts to get a deep, detailed understanding of this generation's life. Given the strategies applied in the book production, it was relevant to understand the role of the designer as editor and author. The emancipation of the designer throughout the years is also approached in this investigation In 30 anos 8 dias 13 people describe their everyday life and, occasionally, they share their concerns about present life and future. However, this portrait requires a chronological context. For that, postproduction will be essential. This operative model has gained importance in the art world since the 1990’s and will be transported to the editorial project.
