Prepared within the scope of the Design specialisation area of a PhD in Fine Arts, the topic of this theoretical and practical work is the Illustration of Children's Books undertaken as part of a Health Education project. It brings together the areas of education, health and art in a study that culminates in the production of two illustrated, interactive books, whose main recipients are children aged between three and six, and their parents. It was found that there is a need, in Portugal, to create new ways to promote Health Education in order to provide adults and children with information on several issues, including accidents in childhood. Furthermore, it was found that illustrated books are a valuable means of communication with the younger ones, and the main objective of the work has therefore been to foster the health and welfare of the child. During the research phase several professionals in the fields of paediatrics and preschool education were consulted, as were parents, in order to understand the best way to pass on to young readers the messages that each book ought to contain. Directobservation tests were also employed, involving children of pre-school age, to determine how they related to the books and their real needs, wants and preferences. The research led to a reflection on the role of books in the lives of children, in which the importance and indispensability of pictures in the books was perceived. The current panorama of illustration for children in Portugal was determined, in which, especially in the last decade, there has been remarkable growth. The multiplicity of styles that characterise it is represented by the examples of the works of three contemporary illustrators. The practical component of this work, as already mentioned, entails a project involving two interactive books. Through the text and the accompanying illustrations each tells a story about a child who is injured. It also acts as a game, as the pages have cut-outs to allow the child to fit the missing pieces. This project is expected to be extremely useful and its continuity could well lead to the production of new works forming a collection of books on childhood accidents.
