Abstract: The present dissertation was written for the obtention of a Master degree in Information and Documentation Science, archive specialization, and aims to study social information in the digital context, emphasizing the validation of digital information. We seek to understand which are the crucial elements required to determine that a piece of digital information is authentic, as well as understand authentication mechanisms, discussing if those elements and mechanisms are identical to those identified for the analogical environment. Through the identification of diachronic key-concepts, we also attempt to normalize the terms ‘Archivistics’, “Diplomatics’, ‘document’, ‘digital document’ and ‘digital objet’. The research consists of bibliographic analysis paired with personal reflections. We look at the development of diplomatic criticism and Information Science to then postulate the contributions of the first to the latter, based on the study of social information. The issues and strategies of digital preservation are also discussed, namely the issues concerning the maintenance of information’s essencial attributes, such as authenticity, integrity, reliability, inteligiblity and usability, for as long as necessary, while maintaining continuous access. We conclude alerting to the fact that are yet to exist preservation approaches that ensure information’s authenticity over the long term. Therefore, the digital environment cannot yet be considered a safe place for the preservation of trustworthy information.
