Abstract: The goal of this dissertation is to give an account of the genesis of A Espada de Alexandre, writen by Camilo Castelo Branco, and also to offer an edition on the model that seems to be the most appropriate. To achieve these objectives, the work is divided into two sections, the first of which is fully dedicated to the genesis. Starting with a brief overview of the socio-historical context in which it appears, both in Portugal and abroad, the preliminary study focuses on the description and detailed analysis of the single manuscript of the booklet which is actually known. Finally, it is also described in detail the two editions published in the author's lifetime, both genetically relevant, and particular attention is paid to the distinctive circumstances in which the first one was published. The second part addresses the question of the edition, taking into account the results obtained in the first part. Thus, it is first presented an analysis of how the singularities of the genetic dossier study affects the edition when trying to use the genetic edition model of Professor Ivo Castro without any modifications, so that it can be then determined the adjustments that allow its application. This model, first used by Castro for his edition of Amor de Perdição2, is the one that has been used since then to make subsequent genetic and genetic-critical editions of the Seide writer's work. Once made the necessary arrangements, the genetic edition of the manuscript and the printed editions are presented. Finally, it is attached the transcript of the material that, in spite of not being genetically relevant, may be of interest to the study of Camilo Castelo Branco’s work. Due to the singularities of the manuscript under study, both the data revealed in the preliminary analysis and the edition itself, may serve as a tool for more detailed studies of the particularities of Camilo’s writing in the future.
