Do mercado à cidade, assim se resume o surgimento de Cabo-Verde, da ocupação da Ribeira Grande, palco estratégico nas trocas comerciais, à urbanização do território por entre vales, ribeiras e achadas. Assomada, cidade do concelho de Santa Catarina, ilha de Santiago, vive ainda hoje no limite entre o rural e o urbano, a sua fama de cidade celeiro deve-se à grande produção agrícola dispersa por todo o concelho, produzindo produtos como o milho, feijão, mandioca e frutas que são escoados para os principais mercados da Ilha, Tarrafal a Praia (capital).
O mercado em Cabo-Verde continua a ter um papel central e dinamizador. Mais do que um espaço comercial trata-se de um espaço social, um lugar de encontro.
A cidade de Assomada, conta hoje com dois mercados, o histórico pelourinho e o novo mercado municipal. A proposta consiste em criar um percurso entre estes dois espaços, onde rua é entendida como programa, como extensão do mercado, algo que informalmente acontece um pouco por toda a cidade, e que o projeto se apoia para dar um novo sentido ao espaço urbano. O pelourinho, pelo seu significado, recebe novos programas de forma a enquadrá-lo com as novas necessidades; oficinas, espaço polivalente, biblioteca, um lugar vocacionado para a cultura, sem excluir o mercado que surge como ocupação efémera do espaço.
From the market to the city: That is how we can resume the beginning of the occupation of Cape Verde archipelago, Ribeira Grande. This latter onde was strategic stage of commercial exchanges, complementary with the continuous urbanization of the land beteween valleys and rivers. The city of Santa Catarina´s district, Assomada, in Santiago island, still lives in-between , in a rural and urban: condition is fame of “barn city” comes from the agricultural production sprawled all over area with the production of corn, beans, manioc and fruits. These latter ones are then drained to the, Tarrafal and Praia, markets. The market places of Cape Vert continue to play a central and invigorating role today. More than mere commercial spaces theres also act as social spaces, places of meeting. The city of Assomada, has two markets, the historical Pelourinho and the new municipal market. The proposal attempts to create a route in between both places, where the street is understood as recerning an extension of the market fuinctional programme. Informally occurs all over the city and our project enhounses the meaning of the informal urban space. Pelourinho, by its significance, receives new uses in order to receive its new functional necessities; workshops, multi-use spaces, library, a place directed to culture, also considering the market which is composed of as an ephemeral elements that occupy the space.
