Através da análise dos filmes Sicilia! (1998) de Jean-Marie Straub / Danièle Huillet e Onde
Jaz o teu Sorriso? (2001) de Pedro Costa, esta dissertação procura identificar afinidades entre
as metodologias de trabalho destes realizadores, enquadrando-as numa abordagem comum à
política do cinema. Essa abordagem é caracterizada por dois aspectos essenciais: por um
lado, o desenvolvimento de processos de trabalho alternativos às convenções estabelecidas
pela grande indústria cinematográfica, assentes na valorização da atenção, do tempo de
trabalho e da proximidade à realidade a ser filmada; por outro, pela aproximação da cultura
erudita a um público dela excluído, nomeadamente através do trabalho com actores não profissionais.
This thesis builds on the analysis of Sicilia! (1998) by Jean-Marie Straub / Danièle Huillet and Where Does Your Hidden Smile Lie? (2001) by Pedro Costa to identify affinities between the directors’ work methods and a common approach to politics in film. Their common approach to filmmaking and politics will be defined through the analysis of the following aspects: the development of alternative work methods that value attention, time and proximity to reality, in opposition to industrial cinematic conventions, as well as a focus on making culture accessible to an audience hitherto excluded from it, specifically through the employment of non-professional actors.
