Atmospheric rivers are long and relatively narrow structures that carry large amounts of water vapour and are associated with precipitation, sometimes extreme, which can have both catastrophic and beneficial effects. Atmospheric rivers more frequently affect countries with a western coast, such as Portugal, although they may have influence in more inland regions. In recent years there has been a substantial increase in algorithms for detecting atmospheric rivers. This work aimed to study atmospheric rivers that affect Portugal, taking into account a synoptic approach based on weather types. Weather types are usually derived from pressure data analysis, with the data being grouped into a small number of categories. This makes it possible to integrate different meteorological parameters into just one index. To achieve this objective, the averages of several meteorological variables were calculated on the days to which the different pure weather types are associated, with special importance being given to integrated water vapour transport. The results show that the anticyclonic weather type is the most frequent in Portugal, which is in agreement with several existing articles. Northeast and north weather types are also relevant, especially in summer. Considering water vapour transport, precipitation and relative humidity, southwest and west weather types are the most associated with atmospheric rivers in Portugal.
