Galeria Zé dos Bois, also known as ZDB, is a non-profit cultural association founded in 1994 by a group of fourteen young people, connected to the art scene, with the aim of creating a space where they could present their works. From 1994 to the present ZDB underwent a process of specialization and institutionalization, in which emerges the curatorial practice of Natxo Checa, its director for the visual arts department and one of the fourteen founders of the ZDB. Checa’s is an innovative and unique practice that has been distinguished within the Portuguese artistic scene. It is also the object of study of this dissertation, which sought to understand, analyze, characterize and document it. Starting from the context of the decade in which ZDB was founded, the 1990s, and the work carried out in its early years, we have tried to follow its activity in the field of visual arts to this day, since it is in this institution that Natxo Checa has been developing its curatorial practice. Since this dissertation focuses on curating, we have dedicated a chapter to this activity, in order to understand how this practice has been evolving over time, and what is the role of the curator in contemporaneity. We then proceeded to analyze the curatorial practice of Natxo Checa, trying to frame it in the Portuguese context, analyzing similar practices, and carrying out the characterization of its methodology. To establish this, the three axes on which Checa’s activity is mainly carried out were studied: the research exhibitions, the artistic residences and the close engagement with the artists. This dissertation constitutes an unprecedented study of a singular curatorial practice, seeking, in this way, to contribute to the reinforcement of a scientific field under construction, that of the curatorial studies in Portugal
