Isto indica a regulação emocional
In parenting, emotional regulation is an ability that not only involves regulating one's own emotions, but also managing and reacting to children's emotions, and which may be influenced by parents' psychopathological problems. Parents with mental health problems can present, in a more persistent way, dysregulated affective displays, thus possibly contributing to the development of psychopathological problems in their children, since children tend to adopt the same affective patterns as their parents. Thus, this study aimed to explore the relationship between parental emotional regulation and psychopathological symptoms of parents and children, in a clinical sample. This consisted of 76 caregivers and their children from 3 to 12 years old, with the first responding to a set of scales, namely, the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), the Parental Emotional Regulation Scale (EREP) and the Portuguese version of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), to assess parental psychopathology, parental emotional regulation and childrens psychopathological problems, respectively. The results indicate that parental psychopathology was associated with parental emotional regulation and children’s psychopathological symptoms. On the other hand, no significant associations were observed between parental emotional regulation and children’s psychopathology. Finally, it was not possible to verify parental emotional regulation as a mediator of the relationship between parents’ psychopathology and children’s psychopathological problems. In this way, the results reinforce the relationship between the parents' psychopathology and the dimensions of parental emotional regulation and children’s psychopathology. This indicates parental emotional regulation as an important dimension to work in clinical practice.
