Esta dissertação investiga o papel epistemológico das imagens naturalistas na constituição da Biologia como uma ciência autônoma, tomando como referência central a iconografia produzida durante a Viagem Philosophica de Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira à Amazônia no final do século XVIII. Mais do que simples ilustrações, essas imagens são aqui interpretadas como dispositivos cognitivos capazes de instaurar novos regimes de visibilidade e de inteligibilidade dos seres vivos e de suas interações com o ambiente. Ao categorizar as imagens naturalistas em três modalidades: classificatórias, ecológicas e evolutivas, a pesquisa propõe uma tipologia que reflete os deslocamentos do pensamento científico entre o Iluminismo, o Romantismo e Realismo. Essa investigação parte de um diálogo entre história da ciência, filosofia da imagem e epistemologia da biologia para evidenciar como a produção visual realizada nos trópicos integrou ativamente os processos de construção do conhecimento europeu sobre os seres vivos. Ao lançar luz sobre essa contribuição, a dissertação reivindica o reconhecimento da tradição luso-brasileira na história global das ciências da vida, sublinhando o papel fundamental de Portugal na consolidação de práticas científicas modernas no contexto colonial.
This dissertation investigates the epistemological role of naturalist images in the constitution of Biology as an autonomous science, taking as its central reference the iconography produced during Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira’s Philosophical Journey to the Amazon in the late 18th century. Far from being mere illustrations, these images are interpreted here as Cognitive instruments capable of establishing new regimes of visibility and intelligibility regarding living organisms and their interactions with the environment. By categorizing naturalist images into three modalities: classificatory, ecological, and evolutionar, the research proposes a typology that reflects the shifts in scientific thought across Enlightenment, Romanticism, and Realism. Grounded in a dialogue between the history of science, philosophy of image, and epistemology of biology, the study demonstrates how visual production in the tropics actively contributed to the construction of European knowledge about living beings. By shedding light on this contribution, the dissertation advocates for the recognition of the Luso-Brazilian tradition within the global history of the life sciences, highlighting Portugal’s fundamental role in consolidating modern scientific practices within the colonial context.
