O presente trabalho apresenta um olhar à acção de um professor primário,
que exerceu funções numa zona rural do interior durante a primeira metade do
século XX, obtido essencialmente a partir da análise e interpretação dos seus
escritos. Trata-se de um actor social que alargou o âmbito da sua acção a toda a
comunidade em que se inseriu e que foi, na maior parte do tempo,
simultaneamente, a sua terra natal. Além de professor, foi autor de várias obras
que perpetuaram a sua actividade profissional e de vários artigos publicados na
imprensa, nos quais se revelou um acérrimo defensor do progresso cultural e
económico das zonas do interior. Mas, este trabalho biográfico procura dar a
conhecer, ainda, a forma como uma personalidade específica, a de João Baptista
Vilares - professor e escritor - , se foi desdobrando em várias outras - de carácter
ficcional e que se foram estruturando nos seus trabalhos de índole literária - , as
quais tiveram papel preponderante no diagnóstico, questionamento e resolução de
aspectos da vida sócio-cultural do meio rural português das primeiras cinco
décadas de Novecentos.
A estrutura deste trabalho foi elaborada de modo a abordar as diversas
facetas da actividade desenvolvida pelo biografado e a entrelaçar o texto, a obra e
a vida desta figura inserida na ruralidade portuguesa e que atravessou a I
República e o Estado Novo. Assim, os capítulos estão organizados de forma a
apresentar uma reflexão à volta das principais posições defendidas por Baptista
Vilares. Os principais traços biográficos do professor constituem o capítulo inicial.
Aqui, para além de um quadro cronológico, é apresentada, também, uma pequena
incursão, organizada por grandes áreas, à vida e obra deste
professor/publicista/autarca/escritor. Os restantes capítulos contêm elementos
caracterizadores do pensamento pedagógico, político, económico e social do
biografado. Nestes, merece realce a preocupação com a regeneração social da
população do meio rural, o combate ao analfabetismo, a promoção da mudança de
hábitos de trabalho nas práticas agrícolas da região e uma análise à evolução do
seu pensamento político.
This work presents a look at the action of a primary teacher who taught in a rural inland during the first half of the XXth century, mainly obtained from the analysis and interpretation o f his written works. We are talking about a social actor who enlarged the purpose of his action to all the community were he was, which was, the most part of the time, his hometown. Besides being a teacher, he was the author of many works which have perpetuated his professional activity and of many press published articles in which he revealed himself a strong defender of the cultural and economical development of the interior places. But this biographic work also tries to show the way how a specific personality, the one of João Baptista Vilares - teacher and writer -, was expanded to many others, of fictional character that were being structured in his literary works, which have a main role in the diagnosis, questioning and resolution of aspects related to the social and cultural life in the Portuguese rural environment of the first five decades of the twenty century. The structure of this work was done so that it could approach the different facets developed by the biographer and interlacing the text, the work and the life of this figure from the Portuguese ruralness who crossed the first Republic and the New State. Thus, the chapters are organized to present a reflection around the main positions defended by Baptista Vilares. The main teacher’s biographical aspects compose the first chapter. Here, besides a chronological board, it is also presented a small incursion, organized in big areas, in the life and work o f this teacher/publicist/autharch/writer. The other chapters contain elements that characterize the pedagogical, political, economical and social way of thinking of the biographied. In these, the worry about the social regeneration with the rural population, the fight against illiteracy, the promotion of changing the way of working in agricultural practices of the region and an analysis to the evolution of his political thinking deserve to be highlighted.
