Contemporary subversive aesthetics seem to suffer a wearing out of critical potential. In a post-utopian actuality in which the ‘new is already behind’, its avant-garde concepts, as traditional forces of artistic subversion, present difficulties in accomplishing a revolution as before. The period of the great revolutionary narratives of industrial society (1850-1950), showed us an art committed to politics and revolution, mobilized by the prospective dimension of social utopia with its radical ruptures with history, emerging from a critique of the bourgeoisie and its aesthetic tradition, determined the overcoming of certain formal aspects of art during the pre-technological capitalist era. The emergence of the new political and social paradigm of capitalism provoked a crisis for revolutionary narratives and critical art in the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century. The last vanguards took place in the dichotomy between: the negativity of anti-art, with its radicality and subversive force, and the art of consumption and alienation that diluted its critical potential. The eighties of the twentieth century marked the collapse of modernity, which established a deep crisis in the avant-garde arts — as they lost their relevance in a new historical context. The fall of communism in 1989 emerges as a major historical marker brought about by the effects of a new post-utopian era, resulting in the triumph of global capitalism. In a time when the subject no longer has historical alternatives that act as subversive forces and potentials against the established powers, the domination of Man by Man knows its most totalitarian version. We assume the need for a political and emancipatory art, however, before an evaluation of recent possibilities of subversive art, we propose to start with a diagnosis of the crisis in the sites of resistance today.pt_PT
