Metals in rolling tobacco and pure cigars

Concentrations of four macro elements (Ca, K, Mg and Na), four toxic metals (Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb), six potentially toxic metals (Al, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) and one low toxic metal (Ba) were determined in 38 samples of twenty-four rolling tobacco brands and one pure cigars brand easily available in Tenerife markets. These samples represent the most common brands of rolling tobacco and pure cigars available to consumers in Spain. The determinations were performed using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Further analyses of the data with SPSS 21.0 software denoted significant differences between different brands of tobacco, different producers and allowed to perform a set of comparisons between rolling tobacco and pure cigarettes regarding their metallic content.
The harmful health effects of toxic metals and other toxic elements in tobacco smoke are not sufficiently emphasized. Tobacco smoking influences the concentration of several elements, mostly toxic metals, in some organs. Cigarette smoking may be a substantial source of exposure to these hazardous elements, not only to the active smoker but also to the exposed non-smokers or passive smokers.
The results obtained in this study, for the mean Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb quantities were 0.39, 0.62, 0.75 and 0.33 μg/g, correspondingly. Overall, the results suggest that the mean metals content in rolling tobacco and pure cigars were similar or lower than those described for other international studies, regarding the mean metal concentrations in cigarettes, showing no significant differences between rolling tobacco and pure cigars.
