| dc.description.abstract | The focal points of this dissertation are the examination of mythological dogs linked to death and the afterlife and the development of a collection of illustrations dedicated to these creatures. Due to the vastness of the supernatural and mythological world, I decided to include both better known creatures as well as some of the more obscure canines. After conducting my initial research, I chose six different dogs that are native to various regions around the world and also from different time periods. The analyzed dogs are: Anubis, Egyptian protector jackal god, guardian and guide of the dead; Cerberus, Hades three-headed dog that guards the gates of the Greco-Roman underworld; Black Dogs, ghostly, nocturnal hounds that roam the countryside that portend death in the British culture; Garm, an ancient Nordic wolf associated with the afterlife and the destructive forces of the world and finally Syama and Sabala, canine sons of Sarama and companions of Yama, Hindu god of dead. The initial stages of my research began with the investigation of the early origins of dog domestication. I also continued my study by looking at the modern evolution of dog domestication within different cultures throughout the world. Additionally, I investigated the presence of dogs in art, works that were relevant and that exemplify their purpose throughout the ages. Taking into account all the research done about the chosen dogs, I will draw four illustrations for each of them, showing their physical aspects and the most well-known features.I conclude this dissertation by discussing the history of bestiaries, from their first appearance in the Medieval times up to the present day where these collections are often created as an auxiliary for the realization of games and television series based in fantasy. I also mention some examples that caught my attention and describe the influence they had on my academic career. Two of these being “The Book of Beasts” and “The Grand Medieval Bestiary”. | pt_PT |
