To understand the relationship between poor multi-challenged families and the professionals of formal support services, is the first step in promoting an effective work of intervention with this population. This research studied, through a mixing methodology, the perception that poor multi-challenged families have concerning their familiar abilities, according to different levels of formal support. In addition, the results between these variables and socialdemographic data of the population in study have been analyzed. For the quantitative component (N=20), the used instruments were the Ecomapa (Hartman, 1995), F-COPES - Guided scales of Personal Evaluation for the Familiar Crisis (McCubbin, Olson & Larsen, 1981, translation of Vaz Serra, Firmino, Ramalheira & Canavarro, 1990) and Questionnaire of Familiar Forces (Melo & Alarcão, 2011). In the qualitative component, Ecomapa (Hartman, 1995) was applied along with 10 half-structured interviews. The quantitative results showed a more positive perception concerning family competences in families less assisted, and the qualitative study revealed the relationship between the availability of the perceived formal support and families’ dependency in relation to the services. In conclusion, we discussed the limitations of the research theoretical and intervention implications, as well as future research clues.
