Abstract(s)
The first action of living things, fundamental evidence of balance and permanence, is the taking possession of space. Since its origin, the Human race’s walked and marked the landscape, leaving its testimony imprinted on it, as exemplified by architecture (Careri, 2013; Corbusier, 2010). Arising from the need to defend the territory, military architecture characterizes many of the urban and rural landscapes of our country, and carries a strong historical and symbolic value, associated with the limitation of the national border, therefore being part of a valuable heritage asset. Recognizing the cultural interest that the Raia Alentejana represents, and strongly inspired by the beauty of its landscapes, it was sought to restore to the old square of Juromenha, a regular presence in the daily lives of the village’s inhabitants, as well as in the cultural dynamics of the country, through the design of itineraries and creation of accommodation, by means of the tourism program. With sustainable concerns, a search for reversible systems, and according to a principle of minimal intervention in the rehabilitated buildings - based on historical documentation - techniques such as rammed earth and light steel framing, and materials such as cork, define the main features of the project.
