The concept of celebrity came up with the development of the media and it is a concept used to distinguish an individual by his or her public image brand (Boorstin, 1992). The celebrity life is also marked by adversities, hence demanding coping strategies to overcome the adversities that might arise. These coping strategies refer to processes and ways of acting that people use in order to adapt and deal with an adverse situation (McCubbin & Dahl, 1985). However, it is important to observe that when different people are facing the same scenarios there will be different consequences, which is closely related to the concept of resilience. The goal of this study is to identify the different types of coping strategies used by celebrities, who lived in a context of economic and social disadvantage before becoming public figures, and their potencial relationship with their trajectories of resilience. Data were collected through interviews from “Alta Definição” a television program presented at the Portuguese SIC channel. The sample was composed of 22 participants (10 females and the remaining males) aged between 24 and 87 years old. In general, the results illustrated several types of coping strategies (self-strategies, escape strategies, leisure strategies, emotional strategies, strategies related to beliefs and strategies involving close ones), and more specific strategies. The participants pointed out that in the context of economic and social disadvantage, they had to create their own coping strategies to overcome obstacles and achieve successful careers, which allowed them to become more resilient. Such context of economic and social disadvantage was associated with positive outcomes, as it contributed to the development of skills and competences that became important for their present life.
