| dc.description.abstract | A presente dissertação centra-se no estudo da vitalidade do português do Sri Lanka (PSL) e foi feita no âmbito do projecto “Documentation of Sri Lanka Portuguese”, que tem como principal objectivo a documentação linguística e etnomusical do PSL e a sua disseminação em livre acesso através de uma plataforma digital online (“Endangered Languages Archive”). Como tal, o projecto inclui também um estudo sociolinguístico feito às comunidades Burgher da costa Este do Sri Lanka, que se traduz neste trabalho aqui apresentado. É abordado o percurso da língua, em termos de vitalidade, desde a sua formação, durante o período de ocupação portuguesa do Sri Lanka, entre os séculos XVI e XVII, até aos dias de hoje. Será visto que, ao longo desse percurso, a língua deixou de gozar do prestígio e distribuição que teve em séculos passados, estando hoje a sua comunidade de falantes reduzida às comunidades de Burghers portugueses que habitam a costa Este do Sri Lanka. Este trabalho analisará um conjunto de dados, obtidos através de um inquérito sociolinguístico aplicado às comunidades Burgher de Ampara, Batticaloa e Trincomalee, que permitirá afigurar o número de falantes de PSL e os níveis de fluência na língua da comunidade. Para além dos números de falantes e de fluência em PSL, o conjunto de dados obtido através do questionário permite aferir a dimensão, o perfil social e linguístico da comunidade Burgher da costa Este do Sri Lanka, bem como analisar padrões de uso do PSL em diferentes domínios e observar as atitudes da comunidade perante a língua. O sucesso da aplicação do questionário não teria sido possível sem o envolvimento da comunidade e das associações Burgher, existentes em Batticaloa e Trincomalee, que foram vitais para garantir o máximo de cobertura do inquérito. Os resultados obtidos permitem chegar a conclusões acerca de qual o grau de ameaça do PSL, bem como lançar as bases empíricas necessárias a possíveis futuros projectos de revitalização da língua. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The present dissertation, focused on Sri Lanka Portuguese’s (SLP) vitality, was written within the project “Documentation of Sri Lanka Portuguese”. The project’s main objective is the linguistic and ethnomusicological documentation of SLP and its open-access dissemination through na online digital platform (“Endangered Languages Archive”). This project also includes a sociolinguistic survey applied to the Burgher communities living in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, which is the work presented in this dissertation. This work addresses SLP’s course, in terms of vitality, since its formation during the portuguese occupation of Sri Lanka, between the 16th and 17th centuries, until the present day. Along that course, the language ceased to have the prestige and distribution it had in past centuries. Today, its speaker community is downsized to the portuguese Burgher communities living in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. The analisys of the set of data obtained by a questionnarie applied to the Burgher communities of Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee, will allow to determine the number of SLP speakers and the community’s fluency levels. Furthermore, the data obtained by the questionnaire will allow to determine the size, the social and linguistic profile of the Burgher community of the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, as well as analise SLP’s use patterns in different domains and observe the community’s attitudes towards the language. The questionnaire’s application could not have been successful without the engagement of the community and of the Burgher associations that exist in Batticaloa and Trincomalee, since they were vital to assure the maximum coverage of the survey. The results obtained allow to determine SLP’s endangerment level, as well as setting the empirical basis for future revitalization projects for this language. | pt_PT |
