Abstract(s)
No conjunto da ficção de Rubem Fonseca, Agosto é a única narrativa possível de ser catalogada como romance de temática histórica, filiado num realismo crítico de feição pós-modernista, uma vez que problematiza aspectos da História brasileira mais recente. Do ponto de vista semântico, por exemplo, o que se verifica é a desmistificação de acontecimentos realmente ocorridos, durante um período político importante, atravessado por uma profunda crise económica, social e institucional que culminou, em Agosto de 1954, com o suicídio do Presidente do país, Getúlio Vargas. Por seu lado, a componente sintáctica do relato evidencia uma postura autoral marcadamente inquiridora, consubstanciada pela activação de determinadas estratégias denunciadoras da posição crítica assumida pelo narrador. Do mesmo modo, as diferentes manifestações do sujeito de enunciação no texto comportam inevitáveis implicações pragmáticas, provenientes do modo de representação da realidade, com destaque para as relações que estabelece com certas personagens do romance e com o contexto que envolve os acontecimentos.
Among Rubem Fonseca’s works of fiction, Agosto is the only narrative that can be catalogued as a novel with a historical subject matter, inscribing itself in a critical realism that is postmodern in character as it problematizes aspects of recent Brazilian history. From a semantic point of view, for example, the work demystifies true events that happened during an important political period characterized by a profound economic, social and institutional crisis that culminated in the suicide of President Getúlio Vargas in August 1954. The syntactic component, for its part, evinces a markedly inquisitive authorial stance, consubstantiated by the activation of strategies that reveal the critical position assumed by the narrator. Also, the different manifestations of the subject of enunciation in the text have inevitable pragmatic implications deriving from the way reality is represented. Special among these are the relations it establishes with certain characters in the novel and with the context surrounding the events portrayed.
