Resumo(s)
In the 21st century, global and national political arenas, existing
development models, institutions and governance arrangements have
failed to produce solutions to the set of intertwined crises which increase
the unsustainability of our presence on this planet. This chapter explores
the main exponents of these crises (i.e. ecological, economic, financial,
and political) framed by a philosophical discussion on the cultural and
socio-political dynamics of the socio-ecological alternatives that embody
a reaction to these crises. Alternatives are then examined conceptually
by inquiring into their capacity to open the range of choices vis-à-vis an
unsustainable hegemonic paradigm, their seeking for collective emancipation
and empowerment, the reasons that underpin the survival of such
alternatives, and the nature of the long-term societal effects that they might
bring about.
