Este trabalho final de mestrado, na modalidade trabalho de projeto, centra-se na recriação literária da variação linguística em The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, de Mark Twain, e na sua tradução de inglês norte-americano para português europeu, estruturando-se em função de três objetivos. Em primeiro lugar, identificar o estado da arte da investigação sobre a tradução de variação linguística, identificando um enquadramento teórico válido para a prática de tradução e a investigação sobre a tradução de variação linguística. Em segundo lugar, analisar comparativamente as traduções para português europeu já publicadas em Portugal, concentrando-se na manutenção ou alteração do perfil discursivo do narrador e de algumas personagens selecionadas, para compreender as estratégias de tradução de variação linguística predominantemente adotadas nas traduções publicadas em Portugal. Em terceiro lugar, apresentar, analisar e comentar três exercícios de retradução para português europeu: (i) uma retradução normalizante, (ii) uma retradução desviante por recurso a uma variedade regional (Terceira, Açores) e (iii) uma retradução que pretende manter os valores comunicativos e sociossemióticos recriados no texto de partida.

Firstly, identifying the state of the art of the research on the translation of linguistic variation, through the identification of a theoretical framework that applies to translation practices and research on the translation of linguistic variation. Secondly, presenting a comparative analysis of the translations into European Portuguese that have already been published in Portugal, focusing on the maintenance or modification of the discursive profile of the narrator and a few selected characters, in order to understand the translation strategies of linguistic variation that are predominantly used in Portugal. Thirdly, presenting, analysing and commenting three retranslation exercises into European Portuguese: (ii) a normalising retranslation, (ii) a deviant retranslation through a regional variety (Terceira, Azores), and (iii) a retranslation that aims to maintain the communicative and socio-semiotic values present in the source text.
