Artífices do couro e da madeira na época moderna : trabalho, sociabilidade e cultura material

O Tribunal do Santo Ofício instaurado em Portugal no ano de 1536 visou o procedimento judicial contra os desvios à fé católica. No entanto, a sua documentação contém informações muito para lá das questões meramente religiosas. Nas suas inquirições é possível encontrar-se referências a várias temáticas que naturalmente envolviam os réus, como o trabalho, sociabilidades e cultura material. Foram estas questões relacionadas com os artífices do couro e da madeira que procuramos explorar e clarificar. Analisaram-se os percursos laborais, com as inerentes problemáticas que envolviam a aprendizagem, a mudança de profissão e os quotidianos dos artífices. Muitos dos indivíduos em análise decidiram migrar, não só por razões laborais, mas também devido a situações originadas no seio da comunidade e por motivos estritamente pessoais, concretamente por razões passionais. A maior parte do dia era passado nas tarefas laborais e aí se estabeleciam as relações sociais, havendo então espaço para uma proximidade aos colegas e amigos que induzia a uma abertura para conversas transgressivas, denunciadas pelos seus interlocutores. Numa sociedade violenta como a do Antigo Regime, os conflitos foram também abordados neste estudo. Os artífices possuíam bens diversos: imóveis, móveis, entre outros, relatados através dos inventários de bens contidos nos processos. As motivações para cometerem os delitos punidos pelo Tribunal do Santo Ofício ajudam-nos a compreender melhor as condicionantes da vida destes indivíduos. Pretende-se então, reconstruir o percurso dos artífices ligados ao grupo artesanal do couro e da madeira
The Holy Office established in Portugal in 1536 aimed at legal proceedings against deviations from the Catholic faith. However, its documentation contains information far beyond purely religious issues. In their inquiries it is possible to find references to several themes that naturally involved defendants, such as work, sociability and material culture. It was these questions related to the artisans of leather and wood that we seek to explore and clarify. It analyzed the work paths, with the inherent problems that involved the learning, the change of profession and the everyday of the craftsmen. Many of the individuals in question have decided to migrate, not only for work reasons, but also because of situations originating within the community and for strictly personal reasons, specifically for passionate reasons. Most of the day was spent on work tasks and social relations were established there, and there was room for closeness to colleagues and friends that led to an opening for transgressive conversations denounced by their interlocutors. In a violent society such as the Old Regime, conflicts were also addressed in this study. The craftmens had diverse assets: real estate, furniture, among others, reported through the inventory of assets contained in the lawsuits. The motivations for committing the offenses punished by the Court of the Holy Office help us to better understand the conditions of life of these individuals. It is intended, then, to reconstruct the route of the craftsmen linked to the artisanal group of leather and wood.
